1. Every DAC Is a Special Snowflake (Unfortunately)
Here’s something the spec sheets will never tell you: every DAC and ADC has its own personality. Two devices with identical numbers on the box behave differently once real audio is flowing through them — different timing habits, different quirks, different moods. So we don’t just plug a device in, see that sound comes out, and call it tested. We build an individual profile for each one: how it keeps time, how it buffers, what it needs to perform at its best.
Think of it like fitting eyeglasses. Everybody’s eyes technically “work,” but nobody gets handed a random pair off the shelf — you get measured, and the lenses get made for you. That’s what we’re doing for every audio device on the bench, one at a time. And like anything measured properly, it takes time.
2. The Elixir Engine Is Learning New Tricks
As those profiles come together, we’re making small adjustments to the Elixir Engine itself so it can read a device’s hardware profile and adapt automatically. Translation: when you plug in your interface, the software will already know its personality and adjust to it — you won’t have to know or care what’s inside the box. The engine does the accommodating so you don’t have to.
Each quirky device we profile now is one less surprise for you later. It’s slow, unglamorous work, and it’s exactly the work that separates “runs on my computer” from “runs on yours.”
3. The DACs Are Coming (Slowly, From Everywhere)
More DACs and ADCs are in transit to the bench right now — from different corners of the world, at the speed of international shipping, which is to say: not fast. We are on a first-name basis with every tracking page. We wish everything could be overnighted. It cannot. We’ve checked. Twice.
Every arrival goes straight into the gauntlet: profiled, tested, and added to the compatibility library before the beta opens.
The Point of All This
Here’s the thing — who knows what you have laying around? That USB audio gadget in the desk drawer. The interface collecting dust on a shelf since that podcast idea in 2021. The dongle you forgot you owned. When the beta opens, there’s a decent chance the Kraken already knows that device personally — because it, or one of its cousins, crossed our bench first.
That’s the whole effort in one sentence: we’re doing the tedious work now so the sound meets your expectations later — on whatever gear you’ve got.
