The most common question hitting the inbox lately: when can I actually get this thing? Fair question. Here’s an honest look at exactly where Kraken Vinyl Elixir stands — what’s done, what’s in motion, and what stands between today and the software running in your listening room.

The interface is done. The browser-based control surface — the part you’ll actually live in — is finished. Main controls, advanced settings, analysis views, setup: all built, all working, all reachable from the phone in your pocket while the record spins.
The diagnostic tools are done. The self-calibration system we wrote about in the cables article, plus the built-in diagnostics that check your audio devices and signal path during setup — complete and in daily use on the bench.
Audio sampling for comparison is done. This one deserves a little more explanation, because it’s the quality-control heart of the whole project. Our development software does a deep analysis of the raw audio coming in — every click, every crackle, every bit of noise gets found, measured, and cataloged before processing. Then it compares that against what the Kraken actually did, and grades the work from both directions: Did it miss something? Any click that survived processing gets flagged. Did it alter the sound too much? Any place the engine touched clean music instead of noise gets flagged too. The result is, simply, a good honest report on the quality of the elixir — pass or fail, in black and white, on every single record we run. And the same sample-aligned comparison ships in the product, so you’ll be able to hear and verify exactly what the Kraken did to your signal, the same way we do.
The x86-64 PC version is complete. If you’ve got a PC, the software is functionally finished. The engine runs, the full processing chain works, and it’s cleaning records on the bench every single day.
🔧 In Progress: The Hardware Gauntlet
So if the software is done, what’s left? Exactly what we’ve been telling you matters most since day one: testing on real-world hardware.
Right now we’re deep in the compatibility campaign:
Building the DAC/ADC library. We’re purchasing a range of different USB audio interfaces — different chipsets, different price points, different clock behaviors — because as the drift and jitter article explained, two boxes with identical spec sheets can behave completely differently once real-time audio flows through them for an hour. Every interface goes through the full bench treatment before it earns a spot on the recommended list.
Now, some honesty: we won’t be able to test every piece of hardware out there. Nobody can — there are hundreds of USB audio interfaces on the market. So the strategy is to test smart instead: we’re hunting down interfaces built on different ADC and DAC chipsets, because most devices on the market are built around a much smaller family of chips inside. Test the chipset thoroughly, and you’ve learned most of what you need to know about every device that shares it. It’s how you get real coverage of the market without buying the entire market.
But even the smartest chipset strategy has gaps — and that’s exactly why the beta will be the most important phase of this entire project. Every beta tester brings a hardware combination we may have never seen: their interface, their computer, their cables, their room. The invitational beta isn’t just early access; it’s the final and most valuable round of compatibility testing there is, run on real setups we could never assemble on one bench. If your gear surfaces a quirk, we fix it, the compensation code gets smarter, and every user after you benefits. Beta testers aren’t just trying the Kraken — they’re helping finish it.
Raspberry Pi 4 validation. The Pi 5 is our flagship small-computer target, but plenty of people have a Pi 4 in a drawer. We’re testing whether it has the muscle to run the engine, and at what settings — because if the answer is yes, that’s a lot of listeners who already own their KVE machine.
The used-PC safari. This is my favorite part: digging through old computers in the closet and hunting the marketplace listings for used, older PCs. Why? Because “requires a PC” should mean your PC — not a new one. We want to find the honest floor: the oldest, cheapest, most ordinary machine that still runs KVE flawlessly. Every $60 marketplace tower that passes the bench is proof you don’t need to spend real money on hardware to get real restoration.
And testing. Testing, testing, testing. Long-duration streaming runs. Full album sides. Records good, bad, and tragic. And then the overnight shift: we feed the Kraken simulated sessions — prerecorded raw vinyl, noise and all — and let it keep processing into the night, hour after hour, while the monitoring software watches everything. Because a stylus can only play so many records a day, but a memory leak doesn’t show itself in twenty minutes — it shows itself at hour six. These marathon runs are how we catch the slow killers: memory that creeps upward, buffers that drift, freezes, stalls, anything that could interrupt the music at hour four of a Saturday listening session. If the Kraken can chew through raw vinyl all night, every night, and wake up with clean logs, it’s earned another day’s trust. The software being done and the product being ready are two different finish lines, and the second one is the only one that counts.
So… When?
Here’s where we stand: we’re tracking for late Q3 2026 for invitational beta testing. With the software complete and hardware testing as the final gate, we’re talking about the last mile, not the long road.
And to be clear about the order of operations — the beta launches when the hardware gauntlet says it’s ready, because “solid at launch” has been the promise since the first line of documentation. Late Q3 is the target the testing schedule supports; the bench gets the final vote.
The tentacles are almost out of the tank.
