Quick update from the bench, typed slightly louder than necessary because my ears are ringing and I’ve lost all sense of volume. This is what happens when “one more listening session” becomes a lifestyle. The good news: every decibel is going somewhere useful. The new Elixir Engine is coming together, and it sounds good enough that I keep forgetting I’m supposed to be working, not just… listening.
Three things happening right now:
1. The Engine: Recoding in Progress
Engine V2 is being recoded from the inside out, and new features are going in as the rebuild rolls. This is the deep-work phase — the one where the whiteboard is full, the coffee is strong, and entire modules that survived for months get looked at, judged, and rewritten better. Every session ends with the engine a little sharper than it started. Every session also ends with my ears filing a grievance.
2. The Diagnostic Suite: Now With More Analyzing
The Elixir Vinyl Diagnostic Analyzer — already the hardest-working tool on the bench — just gained a new analyzer feature. Yes, we added an analyzer to the analyzer. It analyzes more now. The suite that grades your records, catalogs their damage, and writes cleaning prescriptions keeps getting more perceptive, and honestly it’s starting to notice things about my records that feel personal.
3. The Soundtrack: Sampling Everything
And the best part of the job: music is playing constantly right now, with tracks being sampled and fed into the analysis pipeline all day long. Every album that hits the platter becomes data — damage cataloged, repairs rehearsed, results measured. The neighbors think I’m having the world’s longest party. Technically, I’m compiling a dataset. The dataset just happens to have a killer setlist.
So that’s the state of things: ears ringing, engine assembling, analyzer analyzing, records spinning. If you call me this week and I answer with “WHAT?” — it’s not rudeness. It’s research.
So… go drop a needle. The Kraken’s got the rest.
